Ang Yoyo ni Pepe
The Yoyo has been a popular toy for many centuries all over the world. A similar toy may have originated in China during the ancient time, but was modified in Greece and in India in the 18th century. The yoyo was a popular in Europe in the 1790s.
The yoyo was introduced in the Philippines in the 16th century. At first, it may have been used as a weapon to stun enemies. Since then, it has become a toy and many Filipinos were known to be experts in playing yoyo.
Rizal boarded the ship, City of Rome, on May 16,1888. On the upper deck, Rizal entertained American and European passengers with a yoyo exhibition. He demonstrated, among other things, how the toy might be used for self-defense.
A Filipino named Pedro Flores introduced the yoyo in the United States and was able to patent the toy in 1928. An American, H.B. Preston, later brought his patent and established the Duncan Yoyo Company in 1929. The Duncan Yoyo later became famous all over the world.
The old Yoyos were made of wood. Rizal's yoyo was made of kamagong wood that must have come from Paete, Laguna. Now, celluloid plastic is used to make yoyos of different sizes and colors.
Try playing with a yoyo, especially the wooden type like Rizal's. Secure one end of the string to your finger. Wind the other end of the string tightly around the axle of the yoyo. Without jerking your hand, release the yoyo. Observe its motion. What causes it to move that way?
Afterwards, forcefully release that yoyo and jerk your finger to pull it upward when it reaches the lowest point. Do this continuously to make the yoyo move up and down. Lastly, try a few variations of "throwing" the yoyo to come up with a few "tricks".
